Five things in five minutes
This week, it’s Star Wars vs Back to the Future, a tweeting chicken, and The Hangover Clinic is set to launch in Sydney.
The world went pop culture crazy with two of the biggest film franchises to date dominating our news and social feeds for the majority of the week.
Firstly, the future finally arrived on October 21, 2015, the official date that Doc Brown and Marty McFly time travelled to in Back to the Future. The internet was chock full of amazing BTTF-inspired content including a live blog from The Guardian’s film team and numerous stories on whether the future has turned out as predicted. Whilst hover boards aren’t the transport de jour, Nike announced that its self-lacing sneakers will be available in 2016 and Pepsi released a limited edition soda ‘Pepsi Perfect’, the same drink which Marty McFly drank in the future in the 1989 film.
The other big franchise to hit our feeds this week was Star Wars. The seventh in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to hit screens soon and the final trailer hit Youtube this week, notching up an impressive 31 million views at time of writing. In addition to this dizzying number, the film is seeing other impressive stats pre-launch in terms of sales, views and even what is surely a world-record-breaking cinema ticket on eBay (which is going for the hefty sum of $2,000 in case you’re wondering). Only in America…
Adam Goodes has been in the news again with the retired AFL player and Australian of the Year named as an ambassador for David Jones. As well as looking rather dashing in an ad for the department store, Goodes will also advise the retailer on reconciliation issues and its corporate social responsibility program. In addition to this, Australians have come out in their masses to support Goodes after a small number of racist comments emerged on the David Jones Facebook page. Stick it to them Adam – we think you’re doing a fantastic job and you look damn fine to boot. ;-)
Working in PR, we thought we’d seen it all. But this week we were introduced to Betty, the tweeting chicken. As part of a campaign for WA fast food brand Chicken Treat, Betty the chicken is attempting to become the first chicken in the world to tweet a five-letter word. Since she started tweeting, there haven’t been any actual words yet, but it has been a successful exercise for the company with its twitter followers jumping to 35,000. The campaign also proves that sometimes the silliest ideas are the best with numerous media outlets picking up the story including The Today Show.
Ahead of Halloween next week, Air BnB has launched a campaign for travellers to win a stay in the Paris Catacombs - *shudder*. Expect a shedload more Halloween-themed campaigns in next week’s newsletter!
And finally, as we head into the silly season, the answer to all our prayers is set to settle in Sydney soon.
